Developing terms and distribution agreements for Biocleave’s cutting-edge products
Biocleave

Biocleave specialises in protein research and development. Their core market is making biological reagents accessible to pioneering life science researchers. To achieve this, they turned to our team of experts for advice in developing key contractual terms and conditions along with creating specific distributor agreements to clearly set out how third parties were able to use their products.

Biocleave say this has enabled the company to move into a new stage of its business journey with confidence.

'Having expert legal advice as we grow as a business is absolutely essential for us,’ says Liz Jenkinson, the CEO of Biocleave.

‘We were able to explain what we needed as a business and then Harper James created terms and conditions which suited our needs. Having these terms in place now enables us to move forward as a business with confidence.’

'We were very happy with the service provided and knowing we can also access other specialised areas of legal services support, as and when we need them, is very reassuring.'

Like all businesses, Biocleave faced huge pressures thrown up by the pandemic. One of the biggest hurdles was the fact that their 10-strong team of laboratory scientists were often unable to be in the lab due to Covid-19 restrictions.

But the Oxford-based firm was able to navigate this challenge and their team managed to complete the pivotal research that they needed to secure investment. Their hope is this investment will help them to grow even further.

Biocleave found success by moving away from traditional protein expression methods and established their own world-leading engineering technologies. As a result, they have been able to increase the availability of previously difficult-to-express proteins.

Our commercial partner Stephen Pearne was part of the team providing support, he said: ‘For Biocleave, getting the right terms and conditions in place for supplying their products and services was critically important, and they needed those terms to reflect the cutting-edge nature of their protein expression process. The life sciences sector is endlessly fascinating, so getting to know Biocleave’s business and helping them with their terms was particularly satisfying, and we look forward to continuing to support them in their journey as a business.’
